The idea to spot closely the amazing behavior of humpback whales in havens like Praia do Forte has conquered tourists from around the world. An adventure full of charm, the whale watching tourism has been growing around the world as a direct consequence of the end of the hunting activities and the gradual increase in the population of humpbacks. The cause is noble: to raise awareness, through the sighting of whales on the high seas, to the importance of conservation of the species.
Among the advantages, there are minimal environmental impact; educational nature; income to remote locations or little commercial activity; encouraging the hotel and tourism sector; job creation; contribution to scientific research and public awareness of sustainable development. On the one hand the whales watching tourism is an effective whale conservation tool, adding economic value to their protection, on the other hand it is necessary that the activity is kept under constant monitoring and strict supervision, to prevent any undue disruption to the animals – further that, in most cases, the tour is made in whales breeding areas. In Brazil, the practice is regulated by IBAMA Ordinance on standards to prevent and suppress the intentional harassment of cetaceans in Brazilian waters.
The Projeto Baleia Jubarte Project monitors these tours, guides and operators aware of the importance of respecting the rules that guarantee the well-being of humpbacks and also other marine species and receives, in Praia do Forte, tourists in their Visitor Center for a educational lecture with information and trivia about the Humpbacks.
IMPORTANT: Minimum of 5 people. Tour can be cancelled due to weather conditions or number of people.
